Are flies just a pest?

The common housefly can often seem like a pest. They’re known as ‘filth flies’ because they feed and lay their eggs on dog waste and rubbish, spreading bacteria and disease. However, houseflies also have an important role to play in the natural world. They are not only an important food source for animals like bats and amphibians, but they are also pollinators and eat agricultural pests like aphids, so we rely on them for our own food sources.
