Do dogs get colds?

Dogs, and some other animals, can catch the common cold. There are few diseases that can spread between different species, so dogs can’t catch colds from humans. The symptoms are similar though; runny nose, sneezing, coughing, and watery eyes. It could be a fungal infection or a virus that produces the same symptoms as a cold. Kennel cough is a cold-like condition transferred from dog to dog.

While dogs can’t catch colds from humans, cats can. The virus attaches to cells in the cat’s throat the same way as in humans. It’s recommended that those with low immune systems should avoid cats, and not allow cats to sleep on the bed. Apes like gorillas and orangutans can also catch colds from humans as they are so closely related.
