Ossie just turned six years old. She likes to keep herself to herself, and is not always easy for the Ol Pejeta rangers to spot. A playful character, Ossie loves to splash around in the rivers during the rains! She is often found near the hippo hide, near the Nyumba Nne area. When she feels like company, she finds her friend Niji; their mothers were great friends when Niji and Ossie were growing up. Female black rhinos will usually have their first calf at around seven years old – so Ossie has one more year to prepare for motherhood. If she follows the typical pattern, she should have a calf every three years after that. Each baby is a triumph for black rhino populations, and we have no doubt that Ossie will make an excellent mother.
