Elephant weevils are native to Australia. They are only 15mm (0.6 inches) in length and have a long trunk-like snout that they use to slurp up food. These are flying insects that vary a lot in colour depending where they live, because blending in with the background is important!
Enemies of the elephant weevils include birds, wasps and spiders but their speckled body armour protects them from attacks. These insects are also fantastic actors, and will crumple into a heap to play dead to trick a potential predator.
Because of their fondness for fruit these beautiful bugs are considered pests! Elephant weevils gladly tuck in to citrus fruits, blueberries and even grapes on vineyards, giving them a bad reputation in the wine industry!
